SSPM vs CASB: differences, overlap and when you need each

CASB controls how people and devices use cloud apps in real time. SSPM audits how those apps are configured. See where they overlap and which one you need.

A CASB watches and controls how users and devices reach cloud services, while SSPM audits how the SaaS apps themselves are configured. CASB is about activity and access in motion. SSPM is about settings at rest. They overlap on discovery and some data controls, and many organizations need only one at first.

What does a CASB do?

A cloud access security broker sits between your users and cloud services, either as a proxy in the traffic path or through app APIs. Typical jobs include:

  • Finding which cloud apps staff actually use, including unapproved ones.
  • Applying rules on sharing, downloading or uploading sensitive data.
  • Flagging unusual activity such as mass downloads.
  • Enforcing which devices and locations may reach an app.

The question a CASB answers is: what are people doing in and with cloud services, and should that be allowed?

What does SSPM do?

SaaS security posture management reads the configuration of the SaaS apps you sanction and compares it with a baseline. It checks admin roles, sharing defaults, authentication settings, third party app grants and logging options.

The question it answers is: are our SaaS apps set up safely, and have they drifted?

Where do they differ?

Where do they overlap?

Both can inventory third party app connections, though they find them differently. Both can watch for risky sharing: a CASB sees a user sharing a file, SSPM sees a setting that allows public links. Both can feed compliance evidence. Some products bundle the two, which is why the labels blur. Ask any vendor which capability is native and which is partial.

When do you need which?

Start with CASB if staff use many unmanaged cloud apps, your main concern is data leaving, or you need to control access by device and location.

Start with SSPM if you have a few critical SaaS apps with many admins, you have found misconfigurations in audits, or your concern is drift after changes.

Need both if you run a large SaaS estate and handle regulated data. NIST SP 800-207 on zero trust describes decisions about access made per request using the state of users and devices, which is where CASB style controls sit, while configuration quality is part of the resource's own posture.

A constructed example: a ten person design agency using four sanctioned SaaS apps and a lot of personal file sharing sites might begin with a CASB or simply tighten policy. A fifty person company that stores contracts and customer data in two large suites with ten admins would likely get more from SSPM first.

What neither one covers

Neither inspects your source code, dependencies or build pipeline. Neither replaces identity management, endpoint protection or backups.

How do you decide with a small team?

Ask what your last two SaaS related incidents or near misses were. If both involved someone sharing data to the wrong place, activity controls come first. If both involved a setting that was too loose, such as an admin without strong sign in, posture checks come first. If you have no incidents, look at your audit findings and questions from customers, which often point at configuration evidence. Do one thing well for a quarter, then reassess instead of buying both at once and staffing neither.

Where Safeguard fits

Neither CASB nor SSPM is a Safeguard product, and Safeguard does not replace either. Safeguard focuses on the application and software supply chain side, including reachability analysis, policies and gates at build, CI and release, and compliance evidence automation. Treat it as a different layer from the SaaS controls discussed here.

What to do

  1. List your sanctioned SaaS apps and the main unsanctioned ones.
  2. Write down your top concern: data movement or configuration drift.
  3. Ask each vendor which features are native and which are partial.
  4. Pilot one category on your top three apps before widening.
  5. Decide who owns findings before buying either.

Quick check

Is SSPM just a newer name for CASB?

No. They address different problems. CASB governs activity and access, and SSPM audits configuration. Some products combine them, which causes the confusion.

Which should a small company buy first?

It depends on the main risk. Many unmanaged apps point to CASB. Few critical apps with many admins point to SSPM. Test with a small pilot.
